INTRODUCTION TO UX IN MODERN WEB DESIGN

UX design (user experience) has been around since the 90s but is only just beginning to affect all businesses as company web presences are becoming more and more important. With the huge rise in PPC (Adwords, Facebook ads, etc.) campaigns, companies want to make sure they are getting their money’s worth, and therefore the question a lot of website owners have is, “What is the importance of UX in modern web design and how can it impact my business?”

WHAT IS USER EXPERIENCE?

According to Wikipedia, “The international standard on ergonomics of human-system interaction, ISO 9241-210, defines user experience as “a person’s perceptions and responses that result from the use or anticipated use of a product, system or service’”. This means there are a huge number of factors that go into how a user will react to your website or software. The color scheme, typography, user journey, layout, and mobile responsiveness are only some of the influential factors and even these have many different variables to take into account. A 2 column layout or 1 column? This font or that font? Dark blue or light blue? Use a video or text? The possibilities can seem daunting at first but there are ways to make sure you are making the right choice.

BUT FIRST, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

In the year 2018, there are now more than 1 billion websites. You need your website to stand out. You need your website to attract customers and you want them to stay on your page and convert. Experience Dynamics conducted a survey using Google, Adobe, and Quick Sprout users and found that 52% of users simply will not engage with a company if it has a poor mobile site. That’s from one factor. Video helps persuade 73% of people to buy a product or service and 79% of people who don’t like what they find on one site will go back and search for another site. These are stats you simply can’t ignore.

WHAT I SHOULD I DO THEN?

Read Statistics and Perform Market Research. The Internet is a massive place, there are a ton of resources out there to help you. Think outside of the box, who are your largest competitors? What works for them? Survey your customers asking what they think of your site and how you could improve. Even family members or friends can help with that too. With Forbes reporting on it last year, UX in modern web design has hit the mainstream and there are a ton of articles out there to help you along the way. We’re still learning something new every day when it comes to UX design. The best advice we can give is for you to think about the customer’s process. If it is easy, fast, and good to look at – you’re most likely doing okay.
